Breaking The Cycle

A poll commissioned by the charity Barnardos has uncovered some rather negative statistics; according to the research which they have commissioned, more than half of the population believe that UK children are "feral" and behave like animals.

The figures drawn come from a new report entitled Breaking the Cycle, which is part of Barnardos' ongoing Believe in Children campaign which aims to offer support to all children to enable them to grow into healthy, happy adults. Readers interested in today's post may also want to take a look at Are we Negative About our Children?, a BBC article which offers some analysis of the generation gap in the UK.

Whilst we at Beatbullying welcome other charities constructively carrying out research into youth behaviour, it is completely irresponsible to allow our 11 million children and young people to hear that 53% of adults think they are animals – is this really a positive example to set our young people?

The advertisement campaign to coincide with the report is equally disturbing and irresponsible. Intended to show how society condemns young people, it does nothing but enhance extremely dangerous misconceptions and further demonises our youth.

As a result, we urge Barnardo’s to reconsider its decision to run this campaign.

Hi Emma

Thanks for your comment. When writing the posts on here, I try to write from a non-partisan viewpoint, neither endorsing nor criticising any new research, but simply saying "here's what it's about, and if you're interested then here's the link." Perhaps you've started a debate here - I'd be interested to know what other readers think. Leave your comments please!
