Children's charity Buttle UK has just published a report entitled Kinship Care, which investigates how many children are being brought up by relatives other than their mother or father. The research is based on data from the 2001 census, and found that many such arrangements between parents and relatives were informal, which meant carers were not entitled to any financial support from social services. The report also explores issues such as the ethnicity of such children, and the areas of the country where kinship is most prevalent.
Both the full version of the report and an executive summary are available from this link.
